The ADHD Generation

Bottom Line
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is commonly identified when a child has difficulty sustaining attention, regulating impulses, or managing high levels of activity. Over the past decade, the rate of children diagnosed with ADHD has increased by 42%, raising important questions for parents and healthcare providers alike. Along with this rise has come growing concern about over-diagnosis and the widespread use of stimulant medications such as Ritalin and Adderall in children whose nervous systems are still developing.

While these medications may reduce symptoms for some children, they do not address underlying contributors to attention, regulation, and behavior—and they come with real risks. Families are increasingly seeking approaches that support the whole child, not just symptom suppression.

Why It MattersPrescribing powerful psychoactive medications to children carries potential side effects, including appetite suppression, sleep disturbances, mood changes, and dependence—without offering a cure. This reality has prompted many leading healthcare organizations to encourage more conservative, supportive approaches, especially for younger children.

Research and clinical experience point to several key factors that influence attention, behavior, and regulation:
  • Behavioral therapy has been shown to significantly reduce ADHD symptoms and, in many cases, eliminate the need for medication altogether.
  • The American Psychological Association recommends behavioral therapy as a first-line approach for children under the age of five.
  • Regular physical activity increases dopamine and serotonin—neurotransmitters essential for focus, motivation, and emotional regulation.
  • Nutrition matters. Reducing sugar while increasing protein and fiber can help stabilize blood sugar and energy levels, which directly impacts attention and behavior.

What is often missing from the conversation, however, is how the nervous system itself plays a foundational role in how a child focuses, processes input, and responds to their environment.
Where Chiropractic Care Fits InChiropractic care does not “treat” ADHD as a diagnosis. Instead, it focuses on optimizing nervous system function—the system that governs attention, impulse control, emotional regulation, and adaptability.

Children with ADHD frequently show signs of nervous system dysregulation, meaning their bodies are stuck in patterns of heightened stress, reactivity, or fatigue. Gentle chiropractic care may help by:
  • Supporting healthy communication between the brain and body
  • Reducing physical stress and tension that can interfere with regulation
  • Improving posture and movement patterns that influence neurological input
  • Helping the nervous system shift out of constant “fight-or-flight” mode

At Regional Health Center (RHC), chiropractic care is delivered gently and intentionally for children, with the goal of improving regulation, not forcing change. Many families notice improvements in focus, sleep, emotional balance, and resilience over time when care is consistent and part of a broader support plan.

The RHC Approach: Chiropractic + Nutrition + Family SupportAt RHC, we believe children do best when care is integrated and individualized. In addition to chiropractic care, we support families with:
  • Nutritional guidance tailored to growing brains and bodies
  • Education around blood sugar balance, protein intake, and reducing inflammatory foods
  • Lifestyle recommendations that support movement, sleep, and nervous system regulation
  • Referrals and collaboration with other providers when appropriate

Our goal is not to replace medical care, but to expand the options available to families so children are supported from multiple angles—physically, neurologically, and nutritionally.

Next StepsOur practice has worked with many families navigating an ADHD diagnosis, and we understand how overwhelming the process can feel. If you’re looking for conservative, natural strategies to support your child’s focus, behavior, and overall well-being, we’re happy to help guide you toward resources and care options that align with your values.
