The Truth About Ear Infections

Bottom Line:

Chronic ear infections, also known as otitis media, can be frustrating for both children and parents. While a child is dealing with painful inflammation, pressure, and fluid buildup in the middle ear, parents are often left navigating difficult decisions about treatment options and long-term solutions. Understanding why ear infections happen—and what supports the body’s ability to resolve them—can help families make more confident, informed choices.

Why It MattersEar infections are the most common reason parents bring children to the doctor. Nearly five out of six children will experience at least one ear infection by their third birthday.

Several factors make children more susceptible:
  • The Eustachian tubes that drain fluid from the middle ear are smaller and more horizontal in children, making drainage less efficient.
  • A child’s immune system is still developing, which can make it harder to fight infections.
  • Congestion and inflammation in the Eustachian tube (which connects the middle ear to the throat) can trap fluid, creating pressure and discomfort and increasing the risk of infection.
  • Not all ear infections are bacterial. In fact, many are viral, meaning antibiotics are not always appropriate or effective.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, a “watchful waiting” approach is often recommended, especially for mild or non-bacterial ear infections, to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use and its associated side effects.

Where Chiropractic Care Fits InChiropractic care does not treat ear infections directly, nor does it replace medical care when it is needed. Instead, chiropractic focuses on supporting the nervous system and musculoskeletal structures that influence how well the body functions and heals.
In children, gentle chiropractic adjustments may help by:
  • Improving mobility and alignment in the neck and upper spine, areas closely associated with nerve supply to the head, ears, and immune system
  • Reducing tension and irritation around the structures that influence Eustachian tube function
  • Supporting overall nervous system balance, which plays a key role in immune response and inflammation regulation

Research has shown a correlation between chiropractic care and improvement in children experiencing recurrent ear infections. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics observed positive outcomes in children with otitis media who received chiropractic adjustments, suggesting improved drainage and symptom resolution in many cases. While more research is always needed, these findings support chiropractic as a reasonable complementary approach for families seeking conservative care options.
A Whole-Body, Conservative ApproachChiropractic care is often part of a broader, natural strategy that may include:
  • Supporting immune health through proper nutrition and hydration
  • Addressing sinus and nasal congestion
  • Monitoring symptoms closely and collaborating with pediatricians when medical intervention is necessary

This whole-body approach aims to reduce recurrence, not just manage symptoms, and helps parents feel empowered rather than reactive.

Next Steps:
The American Academy of Pediatrics continues to discourage the routine use of antibiotics for all ear infections, especially when they are likely viral or mild in nature. By exploring conservative and natural options first, many children are able to recover without the risks associated with repeated antibiotic use, such as gut imbalance or antibiotic resistance.

If your child experiences frequent ear infections, chiropractic care may be a supportive option worth exploring as part of a comprehensive care plan.
